It's not uncommon that a store will give away gift cards - e.g. to area schools, as marketing devices, etc. You'll still utilize the standard process to sell a gift card (http://forums.resaleworld.com/showthread.php?t=3498), but how does one "pay" for the gift card?
Ultimately, if you're selling something via Point of Sale, there needs to be a payment to cover this sale. If you just click Cash though, your totals at the end of the year will indicate you took in more cash than you actually did.
An option is to create a new Payment Type via Setup > Maintain Payment Types. This will allow you to enter a payment for the gift card you're giving away, but a payment that you'll be able to distinguish from real money. e.g. name your payment Give Aways.

When you sell a gift card, just use your new payment type to "pay" for the card...

At the end of the year, you'll be able to see how many Give Aways payment types came through the register...
