Who is this article for? IT admins looking to grant Permissions to non-admin users.
What does this article walk through? Adding a User, adding a Group, granting Permissions to said group for C:\RWD\ AND HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ResaleWorld.com.
+++++++++++
Many IT administrators will look to create users in Windows, that do not have "administrator" privileges. This is text-book and a good way to decrease the TCO of a computer. This does however, require a clear understanding Windows, Users, Groups and Permissions. A lack of experience with these features within Windows can lead to a VERY difficult time for those not in-the-know.
Many make the mistake of creating/modifying users via the Windows Control Panel > Users applet. This is NOT where users and groups are managed from. Please utilize the Computer Management snap-in to manage your Windows users. If you are unfamiliar with these processes, do not start on this adventure - hire an experienced, qualified technician.
Windows Users are created/managed via the Computer Management snap-in:

Once you have created a user, you will find their Properties reflect which Group they are a "Member Of" by default...

<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-06-17_1300_002.png"/>
If I log in as this employee, I will see the following when I try to launch Liberty...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-06-17_1501.png"/>
This is happening because this user does not have access to the C:\RWD\ folder AND the Registry Keys Liberty utilizes to connect to the database.
How do we remedy this? We need to create a new Group, add this (plus any additional users) to this Group and give this Group permission to access the Resaleworld Registry Keys and the C:\RWD\ folder and
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-06-17_1509.png"/>
In our example, we named our Group LibertyUsers - feel free to utilize any naming convention you'd like. Now we need to add our user(s) to this new Group...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-06-17_1511.png"/>
Once our user has been added to this Group, it's time to grant LibertyUsers Permissions to access both C:\RWD\ with "Full Control"...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-06-17_1512.png"/>
As well as the Resaleworld.com Registry Key...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-06-17_1515.png"/>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ResaleWorld.com
That's it!!! To recap:
1. Create a Group
2. Add Users to said Group
3. Grant Permissions to said Group for C:\RWD\ AND HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ResaleWorld.com
Many techs never call and ask us this, as this is in no way a Liberty issue. Understanding Windows Permissions is at the core of supporting Windows. This same "issue" occurs if one tries to use PhotoShop, MS Word, etc. - if one doesn't have sufficient Permissions that is.
Will a Resaleworld Support Technician help me do this? No. This isn't because we're mean; it's because we're here to do what we do best - support our software.
"But my tech tried this and it still isn't working." Get another tech, period. :) This is as easy as it gets when it comes to Windows, so if your technician is having trouble, this is outside of his/her experience level.
