This article addresses one particular issue in regard to backups - one CANNOT backup the MS SQL Server database by copying RWD_Data.MDF and RWD_Log.LDF from the C:\RWD\Data\Working\ folder. SQL Server is just that - a server. The data and log file are attached to the database server. Thus, even with Liberty closed, if one attempts to access those files directly, an error message indicating the files are in use will appear...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-05-19_0929.png"/>
This is because the files are in fact in use. One should never attempt to directly access RWD_Data.MDF and RWD_Log.LDF, or any of the files located in C:\RWD\Data\ - unless directed to do so by a Resaleworld Support Technician. Accessing these directories and files directly could lead to irreversible damage to your system.
There is only ONE supported backup method and that is the one included with the Liberty software. To create a backup in Liberty4 Consignment, head to Tools > Maintain > Backup Database. To create a backup using Liberty 2002, click Tools > Backup. You will see the following prompt:

Click "Yes" and the backup routine will proceed...

*In Liberty 2002

If the path you have set under Tools > Options > Backup is valid, a confirmation message will appear when the backup is complete...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-05-19_0934.png"/>
When backups are performed from within Liberty, the Liberty Backup Utility creates a backup filed named RWDDATA.RBK. ***NOTE*** - If you are using Liberty 2002, your backup file will be named RWDDATA.ZIP.
In our example, our backup path was set to E:\Backups - an external USB flash drive...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-05-19_0936.png"/>
When we browse to that folder, we see the backup we just created...
<img src="http://resaleworld.com/videos/dean/2009-05-19_0937.png"/>
That's it! To recap, a proper backup is created by doing the following:
- Setting a valid backup location under Tools > Options > Backup
- Clicking Tools > Maintain > Backup Database OR closing Liberty at the end of each day
This is the only supported backup method. Backup info is outlined in the Liberty Help System under Help > Liberty Help (F1)...
